Finley River Chief
Breeding Today For Hounds Of Tomorrow!

1940's

It was in the late 1940's when the Treeing Walkers started to get noticed.  It didn't take long before they were the number one breed.  The first ad in this section has to be one from Lester Nance and his White River Treeing Walkers.

There is no way you can honestly talk about the history of the great breed we love called Treeing Walker, without the mention of the name NANCE.  The importance of his impact and influence on the start up of the Treeing Walker Breed can not truly be measured.

Many people new to the sport don't even know the name LESTER NANCE.  We hope in time after we gather more information to put out the contribution made to the Treeing Walker Breed by men like Lester Nance and others and to give them their own page that they deserve.   Also the History of the Breed deserves to correctly visit the past of the formation of this breed.  It is important that people that love and promote this breed are aware of the true history of the breed.  It is important we Honor The Past, to be able to Promote The Future.

Any help in putting this history together is more then welcomed.  This site is for anyone who loves the History of our Treeing Walker Coonhound.

WHITE RIVER KING

White River King was the first registered Treeing Walker. He is the father of White River Rowdy. If you go back deep in the pedigrees White River King and White River Rowdy are dogs that you will see in so many hounds.

1949 ACHA WORLD CHAMPION FEMALE WHITE RIVER ROWDY

Read about the cross made below with WHITE RIVER ROWDY, but don't think that was the only cross made with her that had an impact on the breed.  The impact WHITE RIVER ROWDY had on the Treeing Walker Breed in the beginning was as great as any female of the time.

The importance of MACK TWAIN to the Treeing Walker Breed has been overlooked by many.  In going through the History in building this site the importance of MACK TWAIN becomes obvious.  There is so many threads going back to MACK TWAIN that almost every strain in the Treeing Walker Breed is touched by him.

One example is WHITE RIVER ROWDY above.  One of the coon dogs she was bred to was HIRAM WALKER, a son of MACK TWAIN.  One of the dogs produced from this cross was DEEP RIVER JOE.  Do just a little bit of research and you will notice the importance of the cross of HIRAM WALKER WALKER and WHITE RIVER ROWDY.  The grandsires of the pups of this cross were WHITE RIVER KING and MACK TWAIN.

Was advertised in the 40's and 50's.

Another hound that had a great impact on the Treeing Walker Breed was CHAMPION INDIANA BOONE BOY.  Don't overlook his contribution to the Treeing Walker Breed.

Don't forget about the importance of the name HERSHBERGER to the Treeing Walker Breed.  Here is an ad by Dick Hershberger on two littlers of pups.  One out of MACK TWAIN.  The other out of  HASLOUER'S SPOT, later to be named SMOKY RIVER. This litter produced HERSHBERGER'S SPOT JR.
